Hyperconverged Infrastructure is the latest in an overall trend of convergence that has hit the market in recent years. A fully software-defined IT infrastructure that virtualizes all the elements of a conventional data center, Hyperconvergence includes, as a minimum, virtualized computing (a Hypervisor), software-defined storage and virtualized networking.

This is the primary difference between Converged and Hyperconverged Infrastructure – all of the software-defined elements are implemented virtually in software (at or via the Hypervisor) rather than physically, in hardware. And because Hyperconverged solutions more tightly integrates compute, storage, networking and virtualization resources in a single appliance, Hyperconverged Infrastructure can simply be expanded through the addition of  nodes to the base unit. All of which eliminates traditional data center inefficiencies and reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) for data centers.
